Presidents Letter

dsc_0648

I’d like to start out the new year by expressing my gratitude for our Surface Design Guild. In the six years that I have been a member, I have learned so much about art and fiber, met so many wonderful people, and have had more fun with our guild than with any other group of which I’ve been a part. You ladies are awesome, and I’m not the only one who thinks so. Several of our members have expressed these same sentiments to me over the years. Thank you Cindie for the fabulous job you did as President during the last two years, and a big thank you to all of you who give of your time and energies to make our guild the great group that it is!

We are starting off the year with a full plate, two upcoming guild sponsored shows and an opportunity to display our art at a new venue, the Florida State Fair. I’m certain that we will inspire those who view our work to want to know more about fiber art and surface design, and we may even pick up a few new members along the way. Stay inspired and continue to make fabulous art!!

Happy New Year!

New Business and Announcements

Show and Tell:

It is wonderful that the membership continues to grow!  However, because of the group size and time allowed for our meeting,  please limit your Show and Tell to three(3) items in the coming year.  Thanks for your support in this.

From Angie Knowles

As we start a new year, I want to share how much I enjoyed being Program chair in 2016. And to thank everyone for the fantastic support for all the workshops and teachers.  Please show Shellee and Elizabeth the same support, and 2017 will be another banner year!

As Mini-Workshop coordinator for 2017 I am looking for volunteers to share a 15-20 minute technique. I know you all have something you can share, so don’t be shy. Step up and show us what you do!

The Original Sewing and Quilt Expo March 16, 17, & 18 the Lakeland Center

Marlene is again coordinating our efforts for the Expo this year.  The Expo is very generous and gives us a 10 x 10 foot booth. They usually have booths for sewing and quilting people so our surface design is a big attraction and unique for their show. See details below on how to volunteer for the show, for our Surface Design Guild Booth and to have your artwork in the booth display (bring to the Feb or March guild meeting).

  • Expo Volunteer: To sign up to be an Expo Ambassador (which is our exchange for having an expensive booth)  Go online to: http://www.sewingexpo.com/Events/Lakeland,FL.aspx    click Volunteer,  Read the instructions and options for being an ambassador. (free passes and classes).  Check over the classes they are offering and if you volunteer early you might be able to help that teacher. Just let me know you have signed up to help them.
  • Guild Booth Volunteer: To sign up to help in our Surface Design Guild Booth either as a greeter or do a demonstration or offer a Make it Take it contact Marlene@123webmagic.com or call her directly. If you are available to help set up the guild booth on 15 March, it would be greatly appreciated. Contact Marlene. Set up time 11-2pm. (plus you get to see the vendors early).  The slots open for greeters are Thursday, Friday and Saturday Early slot 10-2 and afternoon slot 2-5.  The slots open for demonstrations or Make it Take its are Friday and Saturday afternoons 2:30-4:30 (bring things to sell during your demo time
  • Art Work for Display:  Our guild booth attracts a lot of interest because of the artwork we have on display from our members: dyed/painted fabrics, wearables, small art quilts, jewelry, felted items, paper, journals, mixed media, woven items (baskets, clothing, homegoods), spun art yarn, etc. All work submitted can be brought to the February and March guild meeting. Each work must include the artists name, phone number, price if for sale (note: Items for sale are sold by the artist only so volunteer to help in the booth to sell your work). Items will be returned to artists on Saturday, the last day of the show, if they are there at breakdown time 5:30pm (right after the big sewing machine and prizes giveaway in the auditorium) or at the April guild meeting. You can also pick up your artwork directly from Marlene at her home in Clearwater. Just call to arrange a time after the Expo.

WORKSHOPS

January Guild Workshop – Resist Printing with Botanicals

Sunday, Jan 15  Indian Rocks Beach Art Center 1-4 pm $70

Make beautiful fabric images on silk with your locally sourced Florida plants, trees or shrubs. In this workshop you will be making 2 silk scarves to learn how plants and dyes make gorgeous tropical prints. This technique can be applied to larger works of art, such as art quilts, wall art or garment construction. What better way to use your local plants and have a lasting piece of wearable art? This class requires some standing and hand strength to complete the projects.

The supply list for the workshop includes:

Member Workshops

Natural Dye with Botanical Printing and Surface Design with Kathy Hays March 16-18  Dunedin Fine Art Center

Natural Dyes have a beautiful soothing pallet. Couple that with surface design and contact printing with plants to create unique and beautiful designs. During this 3 day workshop you will be using natural dye extracts and can expect to learn about mordant processes of fabrics, how to create surface designs and how to apply plants for added interest and details. No experience is needed for this workshop. Some hand strength is needed to make bundles. This a great way to learn about natural dye extracts and their beautiful array of color that can be achieved.

SHOWS

Entry forms for all the Tampa Bay Surface Design Shows are available on the web site.

Florida State Fair

Beginning this year we are encouraging our SDG members to participate in the Florida State Fair Fiber Arts Competition, February 9-20, 2017. A new division has been created just for art cloth and textile surface design. This is a great way to give your work a wider audience and broaden our outreach for the TBSDG. You may submit work created in the last two years that has not previously been shown at the FL State Fair. All of us should have some work available that fits these criteria. Entry fee is $3 per piece. We will be collecting entered work at our January SDG meeting on January 9 for delivery to the FL State Fairgrounds. Your work must be labeled with your name and the Division and Class.

All applications to have your work considered for the fair are due by Friday, January 6, 2017. You are encouraged to enter online here: http://www.floridastatefair.com/p/events/282. Print and mail applications can be found on the last page of the Fiber Arts Competition Handbook, which can be downloaded as a pdf from http://d2w7gersd1ix5b.cloudfront.net/files.ashx?t=fg&f=2017_Fiber_Arts_Handbook_REV4.pdf&rid=FloridaStateFair. Please be sure to read through this handbook carefully for important dates and specific guidelines for your work and entry process (Art Cloth and Textile Surface Design begins on page 6). If you have any questions regarding the entry process please contact:  Brenda Gregory, Phone: 813-734-2810 or Email: brenda.gregory@freshfromflorida.com

“Blue, Blue, my Heart is Blue”; “Blue Moon”; “Out of the Blue”; “M go Blue.” Blue is a color and a word that has been used in slogans, song lyrics, and sayings. What do you think of when you hear the word “blue,” aka indigo, denim? Does your imagination lead you to think of the color itself, or a feeling, an incident in your life, or song lyrics?

Create a two dimensional artwork inspired by the color blue. A majority (75%) of the piece should be blue. The Guild encourages member’s best work that is originally conceived and created by a Surface Design Guild member within the last two years and has not been shown in a Guild sponsored show.

Minutes of the Meeting

TBSDG Meeting Minutes December 12, 2016

Dec 12, 2016, our meeting was brought to order @6:30 pm. This is our Holiday Party. We had wonderful buffet dishes brought in for our dinner, and the Ham, plates, and condiments were supplied by the Guild. We had a mini fabric collage challenge of 5 x 5’s with two silent pieces of fabric bringing together two unsuspecting members to work jointly. There were some very interesting beginnings. Each team is to apply their own techniques on the piece. It can be entered into Tampa’s 5×5 show in October, 2017. The Installation of the Board members and Committee chairs were confirmed. Aida Sheets- President, Shellee Wells and Elizabeth Neilly – Vice-Presidents/Programs, Mary Ann Pickard – Treasurer, Peggy Dauber – Secretary. Angie Knowles – Mini Demos, Sharon Appler – Newsletter, Cindie Townley – Website, Cathy Simms – Free Table Delivery, Diane Gardener – DVD Library, and Sarah Butz – shows. We still need a chair for the Book Sales. Cindie Townley and Dana Maley will chair the Raffle.

Members who brought a gift received a gift as Aida Sheets read a poem game to create a scramble with the gifts. Hmmm, seems like the ladies became a wee scrambled, and we opened up gifts, a few at a time. Wow, the members outdid themselves. What beautiful gifts, all of us received.

Those that participated in the Round Robin Class will bring their Dyed Fabric to show during January’s meeting.

Aida Sheets requested those entering into the Blues Power Show, email her your description by December 29th, 2016.

The meetings will be held at our new location: Good Samaritan Church, 6085 Park Blvd, Pinellas Park, Florida 33781, starting in January 2017.

The meeting was adjourned at approximately 8:37 pm
